The war in Afghanistan has divided a great number of people in this country. I believe that around half the country is against the mission and half are for the mission.

First lets look at the Taliban. These are a group of people hell bent on torture, kidnappings, murder and demanding that people live the way they want them to live. They are also involved in the growth of poppies which helps fuel the drug trade.

We Canadians live in a free society. We can go to work freely, attend church services (freedom of Religion), go to school, raise our families, so on and so on. We have a great many freedoms to enjoy. That freedom had a price. That price was paid for by the War Veterans of this country. They went off to war to defeat a very evil enemy that wanted to take over the world.I'm talking about Hitlers Nazi Germany as well as Japan.

Today we have another evil that wants to take over the world through means of terrorism and a twisted religion. I'm speaking of the Taliban and al-Qaeda. They have openly stated this. Can we afford to let these evil group of people be aloud to take over Afghanistan and Iraq. I think not. They have openly stated that they hate the west. They murdered over three thousand people back on Sept 11/01.Is this acceptable.....I think not.

So what happenes to the Afghan people should Canada and the rest of NATO pull out of Afghanistan. The Taliban will move back in just as they did before and rule with deadly force. A Canadian Hong Kong Veteran who suffered under the hands of the Japanese, said to me that there is one thing worse than war, and that is SLAVERY......yes Slavery. The Afghan people will be subject to slavery, murder, be-headings and torture.

To those people who want our troops out now or who don't support the mission in Afghanistan.....are these people ok with this.Yes a slaughter will happen.

May I suggest to those who oppose the war in Afghanistan........Think about what I just wrote. How would you feel if this sort of thing happened in our country. The news media have done an awful job of reporting what goes on in Afghanistan. Turn on the six o'clock news or pick up the newspaper and you will mostly hear about suicide bombers and the death of our soldeirs. You never seem to hear about the good our troops are doing. They are saving lives, building schools, bridges and other infastructure. We are there to help the people of Afghanistan.

People tend to blame George Bush or criticize our own Prime Minister. Remember who is causing the death and distruction.....Thats right , the Taliban and the al-Qaeda. It's so easy to blame our own leaders. Funny I never hear of anyone speaking out against the Taliban or Osama bin Laden's torrorists group. What about Iran and North Korea wanting to build a nuclear Bomb.Iran has stated that Israel should be wiped off the face of the earth.Where are all the protests regarding this.

Most Canadians know shit about our military, but now we have all kinds of experts. I remember about 10 years ago, nobody gave a rats ass about our military. Now everyone wants a say. Most Canadians know nothing about Afghanistan.......only what they see on the six o'clock news. I have spoken to people that have been to Afghanistan.Again the news media has not reported the whole picture.

I'm glad that we never pulled our troops out of the Second World War until the job was done and a evil was defeated. My two G-Uncles gave their lives for Canada in WWII so that we could be free today.

I think the people of Afghanistan deserve that same freedom......enough said

On almost everything I agree wholeheartedly, although I believe the Taliban was erraticating the growth of opium prior to military action.

You are right on the money about Ten years ago though D Day. I don't remembering seeing any outpouring of support from the Liberal party or the NDP. As I recall in those days they were very quiet on the issues facing our Soldiers.

I agree with your judgement on the "spin" of Canadian Media outlets. Here's a letter to the editor I sent into the Halifax Chronicle-Herald in mid-August. To their credit, they did publish it. Here it is

The demoralizing tendency of the Herald to bury news stories of Canadian successes in Afghanistan while restricting Afghanistan front page coverage to death scorecards and negative public opinion polls does all Canadians a disservice. Why are stories of our soldier's successes in Afghanistan continually relegated to the back pages? Wednesday, dead lobsters and an accountant entering a road rally made the front page while a comprehensive summary of Canadian successes in Afghanistan was placed by the Herald's editors on page 10. Recently, the Afghani President praised how our Canadian soldiers were interacting with the Afghani population, holding up their conduct as an example for all NATO allies to emulate; unfortunately, since it was good news the Herald placed it on the back pages as well. The Herald's current message to our troops seems to be, "Who cares what you do over there, if you want to make our front page, bleed."

With such biassed coverage, the negative poll results aren't much of a surprise. At the very least, the Herald needs to adopt a more neutral position. Our military personnel deserve better! Canadians deserve better! Most importantly, so do the Afghani people!
